The mandarin tangerine (Citrus tangerina) is a hybrid of the mandarin with the orange. It is a small tree about 5 meters tall with oval, glossy leaves, small, very fragrant, white flowers. The fruit, round with an orange-colored skin and divided inside into segments rich in juice, is native to the Far East but is now widespread also in the Mediterranean regions. Mandarin essential oil (dōTERRA Tangerine) is extracted by cold pressing from fruit peels. It is a light orange liquid with a sweet and fresh fragrance, with citrus tones, which is widely used as a flavoring in the pharmaceutical and aromatherapy industry .

Originally from southern China, the mandarin has spread throughout Asia and then arrived in Europe. In ancient China, during some festivals, the fruit was given to Chinese Mandarins (imperial officials) who gave it its name. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was imported to Europe, first to England and then to the Mediterranean regions. Mandarin offers one of the major anti-stress essential oils. Its scent is sometimes preferred to that of bitter orange (which produces the essential oils of neroli and petitgrain), and is just as relaxing and calming.
